Spring Flowering Bulbs: Webinar, Videos, Podcasts, and Articles
While September continues to be warm in our zone 5 garden there is a bit of a chill in the Vermont air hinting at the coming winter. That means there’s some planting still to be done and one of the most important flowers to plant soon is spring flowering bulbs. Spring flowering bulbs, such as tulips, crocus and daffodils, are planted in October in our climate and even into November in warmer climates. But now is the time to purchase your bulbs and get ready to plant.
In this newsletter, I highlight my webinar on Growing Bulbs. I talk about the most common bulbs to grow and some unusual ones such as fritallaria and fall crocus. I go through the basics of planting your bulbs including timing, location and different ways to plant for a dramatic flower show or naturalizing them in a lawn or meadow. I talk about common bulb problems such as why your bulbs didn’t grow and flower or why they stopped flowering. I offer ideas on deer, rabbit and mice controls and I touch on growing amaryllis and garlic as well. Check out my webinar below.

In this webinar, I talk about different types of bulbs to grow in different places in your yard, some unusual bulb types to grow, including species tulips, and fall flowering bulbs and how to plant them properly. I also go into bulbs problems. I discuss fertilizing and dividing bulbs to keep them flowering and techniques for protecting bulbs from critters. Growing Bulbs in a Pot
If you don’t have room for spring flowering bulbs in the ground, how about growing them in a pot. In this article and video I talk about the size and type of pot to use, proper soil and the bulbs that work the best. I show how to layer the bulbs for a continuous flower show in spring and how to chill them in winter so they bloom properly next spring.

Tulips are everyone’s favorite bulbs but there are types of tulips that are surprising for their flower size, shape and color. Species or wildflower tulips are the original ancestors of the modern tulip. They are perfect for a different look in a garden, meadows or around shrubs and trees.
