All About Pruning: Webinar, Videos, Podcasts, and Articles

March is known for being a fickle month weather wise. We’ve had snow storms and 70F days already this month and it’s not over yet! But one garden chore you can do, regardless of the weather, is pruning. Lots of gardeners get intimidated by pruning and often don’t do enough or do nothing at all. It is important to prune certain trees and shrubs this time of year and I show you all the details in my webinar, How to Prune Trees and Shrubs. Learn more about that webinar below.
But also, many gardeners have pruning questions about specific plants. So, I’ve include pruning articles, podcasts and videos on how to prune lilacs, blueberries, hedges, roses, and raspberries in this newsletter as well. Pruning is an art and science and I try to show how a little knowledge and some imagination is needed to prune well. That being said, many plants can withstand pruning mistakes and recover fine. So, don’t be shy about trying.
So, whatever plant you’re wondering about pruning, you’ll probably find helpful information on my website and in this newsletter. Get out there and have fun shaping and cleaning up your favorite plants.
Until next time I’ll be seeing you, in the garden.

In this podcast and video, I talk about pruning blueberry shrubs. You don’t really need to prune them much in the first 5 to 7 years. Just remove dead, diseased and broken branches. But once they really start producing you’ll need to prune to create different aged branches that will keep the production coming for years. Blueberries can produce fruit for decades, if well cared for. I talk about how to prune and what branches to remove in this podcast and video.

Raspberries are easy to grow fruits, but they do require some maintenance, including pruning. The key is to understand that raspberry canes are biennial, so each summer you should remove the fruiting canes after they are finished. I talk about when and how to prune these July bearing varieties and also how to prune ever bearing raspberries as well. You can get two crops a year for ever bearers, but we cut ours to the ground this time of year to get just a fall crop.
