Natives, Invasives and Weeds: Webinars, Videos, Podcasts, and Articles
August is harvest time and keeping up with the weeds time in our garden. We do a pretty good job keeping weeds at bay, but invasive shrubs, perennials and trees are another topic. These are spreading as I speak in our landscape, so I thought that now is a good time to make a plan to thwart these tough to kill weeds and invasives as well.
In this newsletter, I highlight my webinar all about Natives, Invasives and Weeds. I talk about the definitions for these plants and why growing natives is a good thing. Most importantly I talk about ways to control various common invasives and weeds. I also discuss good substitute plants to fill the ecological space once you’ve removed the invasives. Remember that if you don’t fill that space in your landscape, some invasive will! Check out my webinar below.
In this newsletter, I also dive into some articles, podcasts and videos on controlling perennial weeds, stopping invasive plants in your landscape, and organic weed control. Making sure you remove annual weeds before they set seeds is important, as well as, rooting out perennial weeds so they don’t overwinter in your landscape and take over next spring.
Until next time I’ll be seeing you, in the garden.

How to Grow: Controlling Perennial Weeds

Japanese knotweed, quack grass, horsetail and gout weed are some perennial weeds that plague our gardens. Perennial weeds are tough to control because many of them spread by underground runners and if you leave any of the root in the soil, it will send up a new plant.
In this podcast/article, I talk about evaluating your bed to decide whether it’s worth saving or time to start over, using strategies, such as mowing and tarps, to weaken the plants, drawing a line in the sand where you won’t let the perennial come back and planning on growing tough natives to keep it away.
